What to Expect in Your First Session with an Eating Disorder Psychologist
Taking the step to see an eating disorder psychologist is a big step. Whether you’ve been thinking about it for weeks, months, or years. It’s normal to feel nervous, unsure, or even a little scared before your first appointment. Our goal is to give you a clear picture of what to expect so you can feel more at ease.
And yes, you don’t even need to leave your couch. As telehealth Psychologists in Australia, we offer sessions online, making support accessible and flexible to fit in your often very busy schedule.
First Things First: It’s a Conversation, Not an Interrogation
Many people worry their first session will feel like a test, with right and wrong answers. In reality, it’s a gentle conversation. We’ll talk about what’s been going on for you, such as your relationship with food, body image, and emotions, but also about your strengths, supports, and what’s important to you.
We Move at Your Pace
You don’t have to share everything at once. If there are parts of your story that feel too big or raw, that’s okay, we’ll take our time. Our approach is trauma-informed, Health at Every Size aligned, and neuroaffirming, which means we’ll never shame or blame you for your experiences or your body.
What I’ll Ask About
To get a full picture, I may ask about:
Your eating patterns and food rules (if any)
Body image and how you feel in your body
Emotional wellbeing (anxiety, depression, perfectionism, trauma history, etc.)
Your support network and medical history
What you hope to get out of therapy
But remember, you’re the expert on your own life. We are here to listen and collaborate, not to prescribe a one-size-fits-all plan.
Setting Up for Telehealth Comfort
Your first session is usually 50–60 minutes in duration. You’ll just need a quiet space, a device with a camera, and maybe a cup of tea (optional but recommended). Some clients like having a notebook nearby to jot down thoughts, or even a weighted blanket for comfort. Whatever helps you feel safe and grounded is welcome.
After the Session
By the end of our first appointment, you’ll hopefully feel seen, heard, and a little lighter knowing you don’t have to carry this alone anymore. We’ll also talk about next steps, whether that’s ongoing therapy, linking in with a dietitian, GP, or psychiatrist, or simply setting some small, manageable goals.
A Final Reassurance
Starting therapy is brave. It’s also tender. You don’t have to “prove” your eating disorder is bad enough, and you won’t be judged on your body size, symptoms, or story. Every person’s journey is valid, and every step toward healing matters.
If you’re ready to take that step, know that compassionate, HAES-informed support is available, wherever you are in Australia.
We offer telehealth sessions nationwide, so you can access care from the comfort of your own home. Reach out to us if you’d like to begin your recovery journey. Contact us now.
