What Is Neuroaffirming Care?

Neuroaffirming care is an approach that supports the natural variation in how people experience and process the world. Rather than viewing Autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dysgraphia, etc.. as deficits to be fixed, neuroaffirming care sees these as valid expressions of human diversity, each with its own strengths, needs, and perspectives.

In practice, that means therapy that’s flexible, collaborative, and deeply respectful of individual needs. We adjust how we communicate, how sessions are structured, and how goals are set, because care should work for you, not against you. This also means challenging the societal rules of having to abide by neurotypical rules.

Too often, neurodivergent people have been misunderstood, stigmatised or forced to mask (Hide) who they are. For many neurodivergent people, traditional therapy has not always felt safe or effective. Some approaches may rely on compliance, masking, or rigid expectations that don’t align with neurodivergent experiences. Neuroaffirming care does the opposite. We use user-friendly platforms and adapt session formats based on each person’s preferences. That might include providing extra visual structure, using written supports and building in more breaks during sessions if needed.

Adapting Eating Disorder Treatment for Neurodivergent Clients

At recoverED Clinic, we recognise that eating disorders and disordered eating can present differently in neurodivergent individuals. Autism, ADHD, and other forms of neurodivergence can influence how people experience their body such as hunger, satiety, interoception, sensory sensitivities, routines, and emotional regulation.

Traditional eating disorder models don’t always fit neatly here, and that’s where neuroaffirming care makes a difference.

Our psychologists adapt eating disorder treatment by:

  • Understanding sensory experiences with food (e.g., texture, smell, or visual sensitivities) and finding practical, acceptable alternatives that still meet nutritional needs.

  • Recognising differences in interoception, helping clients reconnect to body cues in ways that feel safe and manageable rather than overwhelming.

  • Respecting routine and predictability, while gently introducing flexibility when it’s safe to do so.

  • Using clear, concrete communication and visual supports to reduce ambiguity and anxiety around meals or body cues.

  • Avoiding moral language about food or weight, and focusing instead on function, nourishment, and self-compassion.

  • Collaborating with each individual to set realistic, person-centred goals that align with their sensory and cognitive profiles.

This neuroaffirming, trauma-informed approach ensures that treatment is not just effective, but truly sustainable because it meets people where they are, not where the system expects them to be.
